Women's Football Success

For us, one of the most exciting developments in footballing this year has to be the explosion of the women’s game...

Here at City of Football, we love the beautiful game in all its forms. Looking back over this year, one of the most exciting developments in the footballing world has to be, for us, the explosion of women’s football.

The women’s game has seen a real growth in fans this year, at the same time, the England women’s team climbed to third in the Women’s World Cup – probably not coincidentally.

There are loads of reasons to love women’s football – they have as much skill and talent as the men. As the ticket prices for men’s games soar high enough to spark protests, tickets to women’s matches are more affordable, making family trips to watch a match a possibility once more.

We’ve also seen it said that away from all the posturing and timewasting of men’s professional football, women’s football is a ‘purer’ version of the game. Like the football of old, when players were in it for the love of the sport.

One of the key aims of City of Football is to get as many people involved in football as possible. That means encouraging people who might be nervous to try it out or who have never thought of giving it a go. These people are often young girls, put off in school by the idea that football is a boys’ sport. It’s not. Girls have equally as great potential to be phenomenal footballers.

We’re lucky enough in Nottingham to have a fantastic women’s teams as role models – Notts County Ladies, take a bow. You too Forest Ladies. Working with them, we’ve been running girls’ football sessions across the city, which have been a runaway success.

If you want to find out more about the sessions we’re running for girls in Nottingham, you can check out the activity section of our site here.

We wanna see all of Nottingham’s women out on pitches soon, showing everyone that #NottsGirlsCan.
