Girls Football Sessions Taking Place All Over Summer

29 July 2015

COF has joined forces with Nottingham Forest in the Community and Notts County Football in the Community coaches to offer football sessions for girls across the city this summer...

The free sessions will be held at various locations across Nottingham and are aimed at girls aged 12-18, particularly those who have never played the game before.

Nottingham City of Football Managing Director, Amanda Chambers, believes that the recent success of the England Women’s team and Notts County Ladies will help inspire female participation in events like these across the city this summer.

Chambers said: “With Notts County Ladies reaching the Women’s FA Cup Final and the Women’s national side achieving a bronze at the World Cup in Canada earlier this month, there’s never been a better time for women and girls to get involved in football.”

Chambers, who was appointed permanent MD of the City of Football project in April 2015, admits she has already seen an increase in young girls who want to get involved in playing the game.

She commented: “The whole city is excited for the Women’s FA Cup Final and there’s a real buzz around the women’s game right now. There are some amazing role models within the Notts County Ladies side and everyone in Nottingham is fully behind the team for the final this weekend.

“With more opportunities to get involved in girls only coaching sessions across the city we’ve seen a surge in the number of girls taking part, which is fantastic news for the City of Football.”

Nottingham was crowned England’s City of Football by Sport England and will receive £1.6million of National Lottery funding over the next two years. Chambers hopes the initiative will help to increase participation across the whole of the UK.

She said: “We want Nottingham to be the beacon for female participation in football across the UK. There are so many girls out there that aren’t involved in football activities at the moment and our challenge is to engage them by offering a whole new angle on how the game is viewed.

“These sessions give a chance for girls to come along, try something new and follow in the footsteps of their heroes.”

The girls-only sessions with the Notts County and Nottingham Forest Football in the Community programmes are taking place every week throughout the summer. There is also a brand new Female Footy Fives five a side football scheme running on Monday evenings. For more information go to www.femalefootballfives.co.uk
