If The Glove Fits

1 January 0001

A good goalkeeper needs good gloves. Which is why England player Carly telford has set about designing a range especially for women.

Being a goalkeeper is not for everyone.

Often it’s the last place in the team to be filled, with all the other hotshots reluctant to put themselves in the firing line.

It takes courage, it takes heart, and it also requires a nice pair of gloves. Just as it would be impossible to kick a ball to the best of your ability with the wrong size boots, if the gloves don’t fit, you’re not going to have much confidence in goal.

Women goalkeepers, in particular, have been struggling with this issue for far too long. Most goalie-glove designs are modeled on male hands, which are inevitably larger and broader than those of their female counterparts.

Notts County and England goalkeeper Carly Telford decided recently to do something about it instead of suffering in silence. She teamed up with Precision Training, who specialise in goalkeeping equipment, to create a sleeker set of gloves that fit a woman’s hands more comfortably.

The design is narrower across the palm, shorter in the fingers, has a reduced wrist strap length and a tighter backhand in comparison with a men’s goalie-glove.

Telford is so happy with the new gloves that she’s been using them since their conception and has seen a marked improvement in her performance. They were officially launched in March and look set to play a major role in the Women’s Super League this season, cushioning hands all over the country.

Even better, Telford will be joining us here in Nottingham soon to encourage more women to become goalies - with the right gloves, of course!
