Notts County Ladies at the Women's World Cup 2015

2 July 2015

England ladies caused a storm out in Canada at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015 getting to the semi-finals before going out in stoppage time to Japan. They did this with a quartet of local lionesses in their ranks...

Laura BassettLaura Bassett

Position: Centre back
England caps: 54
England goals: 2
Date of birth: 2 Aug 1983
Height: 165cm
International debut: Vs Italy on 25 Feb 2003

Laura played in four of England's five games and revelled in her position at the heart of England's defence alongside captain Steph Houghton. She was thought by many to be England’s stand-out player in Canada, but her memories of the tournament are likely to be tainted by scoring the 92nd minute own goal that put her team out. Bassett, 31, is not blessed with pace but was a rock at the back during the tournament. She signed for Notts County from Chelsea at the start of the 2014 season.

Alex GreenwoodAlex Greenwood

Position: Left back
England caps: 15
England goals: 1
Date of birth: 7 Sept 1993
Height: 168cm
International debut: Vs Italy on 5 Mar 2014

Alex was signed for Notts County from Everton at the end of the 2014 season, moving after the Merseyside club’s relegation to secure her international place. She’s played twice in the World Cup (starting in the 2-1 wins against Columbia and coming on as a second half substitute for Chelsea’s Claire Rafferty against Mexico).

Ellen WhiteEllen White

Position: Forward
England caps: 54
England goals: 17
Date of birth: 9 May 1989
Height: 170cm
International debut: Vs Austria on 25 Mar 2010

Ellen signed for Notts County from Arsenal at the beginning of the 2014 season, but then suffered an ACL injury and was out for the entire season. She got back into training this January and got fit just in time to reclaim her World Cup place. She played three games in the tournament, starting in the 1-0 opening loss to France and coming on as a substitute in both the 2-1 quarter final win against Canada and the 2-1 semi final loss against Japan.

Carly TelfordCarly Telford

Position: Goalkeeper
England caps: 6
England goals: 0
Date of birth: 7 Jul 1987
Height: 174cm
International debut: Vs Iceland on 16 Jul 2009

Carly was signed for Notts County from Chelsea at the start of the 2014 season after a spell in Australia with Perth Glory. Carly was the only England player who didn’t make an appearance in the World Cup as the third-choice keeper behind Manchester City’s Karen Bardsley and Arsenal’s Siobhan Chamberlain. However, she’s younger than both her rivals for the England number one journey so can be hopeful of getting more chances next time around.
